This commission gave the chance for the creators of The Fragmented Orchestra (Jane Grant, John Matthias and Nick Ryan) and Kin to work together again on a new installation 'Plasticity'. The installation consisted of an array of microphones distributed across the entrance of the space and a network of speakers, arranged across the walls. The network comes alive in direct response to visitor input into the microphones and is in effect stimulated by the sounds within the environment.
Each speaker represents a neurone in the human brain, and the sounds you input are stimulating the connections between them. As sounds are scattered across the array of speakers, emergent patterns reveal the complex firing patterns of the neurones and the plasticity of the network.
Plasticity develops over the course of time, previously unheard patterns and connections emerge as the installation evolves, creating a unique sonic and visual experience.
The installation was exhibited as a part of Onedotzero's Festival in Motion 2011 at the BFI Southbank and also installed at Google Campus for its launch in April 2012.
